In an effort to transform education for children in the region, the East African Community has partnered with the nonprofit organisation One Laptop per Child (OLPC) to improve access to laptops by young learners.

The two organisations agreed to work together to leverage the advantages of promoting OLPC in transforming primary school education in EAC member states and to promote strategies for better access to laptops and connectivity– especially for the region’s underprivileged children.

The organisations hope to deliver 30 million laptops in the region by 2015.

“If you want to build a knowledge economy, you must have a computer literate population, starting from primary, secondary school children and all the way to university,” said EAC Secretary General Juma Mwapachu.

The MoU was signed in Kampala during the EAC Investment Conference.
