I-Network Uganda has joined hands with a Swedish based organisation SPIDER (The Swedish Program for ICT in Developing Regions) to start a project for ICT students (ANTS Uganda).

The Academic Network for Technical Support (ANTS Uganda) is an initiative that was set up to address three shortcomings of the Ugandan ICT-sector; the lack of industrial training for university students, the poor availability of basic ICT-services on the market to a reasonable price and the non-existence of reliable ICT-statistics. The project will comprise of mainly ICT students who will gain practical skills during their course of work and in turn provide Ugandan organisations mainly SME’s, CBO’s and NGO’s with moderately priced ICT-services.

SPIDER’s mission is to assist developing countries with promotion and deployment of ICTs for combating the digital divide and reducing poverty, in line with the UN Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). SPIDER is governed by a board with representatives from EU Parliament, Senior Management of Swedish Universities, Private Companies and SIDA. Please visit www.spidercenter.org for more information.

SPIDER Project Manager Karoline Beronius was in Uganda 11th-15th September and met with a number of ICT for development organisations, the purpose was mainly to establish contact with I-Network but also to see opportunity for SPIDER’s growth within the region. The project started in October 2006 and is part of the I-Network Education Node. It is run by a newly recruited Project Manager and is backed up by the I-Network Expertise Team.
