Press Release: JOURNALISTS WIN ICT MEDIA AWARDS.
 
Two journalists both members of the media node have won the 2006 I-Network Uganda ICT media awards. Mr. Edris Kisambira from the EastAfrican business week had the best entry in print while Mr. Micheal Wambi from Voice of Teso won the Radio category.
 
The awards are meant to recognize and reward excellence while at the same time motivating journalists to educate the public about Information Communication Technologies (ICTs) for development.
 

Mr. Wambis’s story examined the potential for use of ICT’s in the fight against crime while the best story overall for Mr. Kisambira highlighted the challenging environment against which Internet Café operators struggle to provide a basic service. The story examined their plight and deficiencies on the regulatory side.
 
While speaking at the function the guest of honour, Mr. Edward Baliddawa, the ICT committee chairperson in parliament and MP Kigulu North Iganga district said he hoped the media node, especially the winners and all who participated in the contest will continue to question the implementation of ICT policy matters.
 
He said funding of the newly created ICT ministry was very low Ushs 1 billion and yet throughout the world, ICT is leading the path of transformation. He urged the media to bring attention to these issues and help the government rethink funding allocations and priorities as well as educate the public about e-government.
 
Edris Kisambira of The EastAfrican Business Week was named Uganda ICT Journalist of the Year 2006 by a panel of judges led by the president of the East African Media Institute (EAMI) Micheal Wakabi. Others were Antony Mugeere from Cipesa and Edward Ojulu the Business editor in the weekly Observer newspaper.
 
The winners got presents from I-network including $200, a T-Shirt and 2007 diary each. Cell2Cell gave the winner a trendy Motorola V3 phone presented by Mr. Denis Patrick Okori sales and Marketing manager Cell2Cell the authorized Motorola distributor in Uganda.  
 
ICT Media Awards are an annually event sponsored by the I-Network for the Media Node.
