I-Network Mailing List moves to new improved Dgroups Platform PDF Print E-mail

By Rachael Kadama

I-Network manages a mailing list, which creates a platform for Ugandans and those with interests in Uganda to discuss issues concerning ICT for development hosted on the Dgroups platform.

The platform provides a space for ICT sector individuals to share their experiences, help and support each other, troubleshoot technical problems as well as discuss policy and development issues related to ICT.

The I-Network mailing list, which currently carries a subscription of over 980 members is one of the most active lists on the Dgroups platform and is currently ranked the 5th most active group.

Organizations behind Dgroups have recently formed the Dgroups Partnership with over 20 members including International Institute for Communication and Development (IICD) who currently support I-Network’s knowledge sharing activities.

The partnership is currently administered by ICCO and the new platform hosted by WA Research on behalf of the partnership.

Dgroups was set up in 2002  as an online platform offering tools and services that bring individuals and organisations together in the international development community. Today, Dgroups is a partnership of organizations committed to:

1.         Provide open and accessible Internet spaces and services where members of the international development community can safely share information, collaborate and engage in dialogue and networking.

2.         Support the international development community to mobilize and apply its collective knowledge and expertise.

Over the last few months, the partnership has undertaken the improvement of the Dgroups platform. Dgroups 2 provides a better platform for communication and sharing. Some of the features you find with the improved Dgroups include:

  • A better and more intuitive design and interface allowing users to interact more and in an easier way than before.
  • With Dgroups 2, every user has a personal “dash board” which displays, all recent activity on the platform as well as all the groups a user belongs to.
  • A group home page, which shows you activity for one of the groups you are signed up for. In the case of the I-Network mailing list, the group home page shows you recent posts, discussions and documents that have been posted by members of the group.
  • A personal account page, which gives user account information. This page allows the group users to manage their account information including primary email address and passwords.
  • Events page, with a listing of events posted to the group.
  • Users can follow discussions either through email or online (group website)

A users guide developed by the Dgroups partnership is available on the I-Network website (http://www.i-network.or.ug/i-network-mailing-list-rules.html ) for users to view and learn more about how to use the new platform.
