Using ICT to improve rural health PDF Print E-mail

By Edison Ariho

Health Child is a local organization committed to promoting the health of children through reduction of child morbidity and mortality. Health Child presently works in selected areas in Jinja District (Kakira, Budondo, Masese- Walukuba and Mafubira sub-counties and Kisima islands)

Health Child's mission is to create a safe and secure healthy environment for young children and young care givers at the household and community level so that children—both girls and boys can experience a safe and fruitful childhood; and that they will grow to become responsible and productive adult persons in their communities.

Health Child has taken up the use of ICT to facilitate and enhance the information services that it provides and also give young mothers a chance to use the Internet and online services to learn.

Below is a testimony of one of the project end users.

My name is Nakatudde Alice, aged 48 years. I come from Embera in Masese 1 and I am a Priest in the local church.

First and foremost, I would like to thank the organization, the staff of Health Child and the sponsor of the organization. May god bless you abundantly. I had lost hope in my own education in 1977 when I stopped schooling in Senior One. I started using the Health Child resource centre in June 2008 at a time when I had even forgotten the little English that I once knew.

When I reached at the resource centre, the trainers Edison and Chandiru welcomed me even at my old age of 48 and taught me about computers, sanitation, hygiene, family planning and nutrition. This has helped me in caring for my grand children.

While at Health Child, I thought I would not manage to study because I did not know English. But after reaching there, I found a lot of lessons and I received a lot of counseling, guidance as well as education on how to teach other community members on health-related topics. I thank God for this organization because I have realized that education has no limit and not being serious is a big problem. I am now able to help others and to care for my grand children through use of the knowledge I received from Health Child.

I am thankful because all these good services have been given to me free of charge and I have also met many useful friends. I am now able to help and care for God’s people through educating them on sanitation, hygiene, nutrition and family planning in my community. I am encouraging the community members to take up the chances brought by Health Child project in this area of Masese 1.

Also, I have learnt how to utilize locally available foods to improve the nutrition of my grand children. This information was all given to me during the education sessions on nutrition at Health Child. I have learnt how to prevent diseases, especially malaria and diarrhoea, through keeping good hygiene and sanitation habits in the community. I stopped in senior one because of school fees problems and lack of interest in studies, but I now feel that if I ever get school fees, I can go back and study because I have realized the value of education.

I thank everyone at Health Child because I never dreamt of being where I am now. I hope that the organization keeps teaching health related issues, so that community members can be able to protect their children from diseases and become healthy.
