Google Mobile in Uganda PDF Print E-mail

06 July 2009

ImageGoogle SMS is a suite of mobile applications that allows you to find information on topics as diverse as sexual & reproductive health, and agriculture to sports scores and weather.

It also includes a new marketplace application, Google Trader, that will help buyers and sellers find each other; use it to buy and sell electronics, crops, tools, cars, properties, or anything else that you need or have.

The mobile phone based information service is expected to greatly ease the day to day life of the rural population helping them to easily access vital data and advise on issues ranging from business, agriculture, health, environment, weather etc. thus improving their knowledge and providing an opportunity to improve their social welfare.
The introduction of the service is a culmination of an 18-month-long field-based program in Uganda and an innovative partnership that strategically combines the resources of MTN, Grameen Foundation and Google. The five mobile phone applications provide real-time information in three domains: agriculture, health, and a virtual marketplace for buying and selling goods and services. The applications were developed by Grameen Foundation’s Application Laboratory (AppLab) and are powered by MTN on the Google SMS search platform.

initial reactions to the new service from members of the I-Network mailing list can be read on d-groups.

To start using Google SMS Search, simply text message your search query to one of the following short codes.

Google SMS is free from Google but charges from your carrier for usage may apply. The service is currently available on MTN Uganda only.
