Gender Research in Africa into ICTs for Empowerment PDF Print E-mail

08 Feb 2010

The Gender Research in Africa into ICTs for Empowerment GRACE is a project that was initiated in 2005 with an aim to provide context specific data on how women in Africa use information communication technologies (ICTs) to improve their lives, barriers that prevent them from accessing and utilisation of ICTS and how they surmount these barriers. With support from the International Development Research Center (IDRC), GRACE evolved into an African network of Gender and ICT researchers involving 14 research teams in 12 different African countries including Uganda.

During the first phase of GRACE, researchers from Africa conducted research studies aimed at interrogating the external, structural barriers women experience, as well as on the internal factors which prevent or enable them to use ICTs to their advantage, and the strategies they employ to overcome impediments. Uganda was represented by 2 research teams that contributed to the research project during the first phase which ran from 2005 to 2008. The teams included Prof. Grace Bantebya Kyomuhendo from the Department of Women and Gender Studies, Makerere University of Kampala and Dr. Dorothy Okello, Angela Nakafeero and Susan Bakesha from the Women of Uganda Network.

The findings from the first research phase were captured and published in a book titled "African Women and ICTs: Investigating Technology, Gender and Empowerment", published by Zed Books. The book was released and launched in Dar es Salaam in April 2009.

The Uganda teams are planning to hold a launch of the book in as part of the ongoing process on sharing and dissemination of the research findings. The purpose of this letter is to invite you to be part of the launch in Uganda that is scheduled to take place on 11th February 2010 at 2pm at the Department of Food Science and Technology conference room, Makerere University. The guest of honour will be Hon. Alintuma Nsambu, Minister of State for ICTs. The function will also be honoured by the presence of Prof. Venansius Baryamureeba, the Vice Chancellor, Makerere University.
