Historical records of Church of Uganda archived electronically PDF Print E-mail

By Vincent Mugaba

A new library that will archive electronic copies of historical records of  Church of Uganda and consequently all the Uganda Christian University (UCU) documents is under construction.  The Hamu Mukasa Library, a multi-million dollars facility under construction this year at UCU campus, will have modern IT facilities that will allow users on and off site to access electronic records. The groundbreaking event of the library was video conferenced between universities and partner institutions in Uganda. From Makerere University the vice chancellor’s team could watch the unfolding event from Uganda Christian University. "It is a taste of things to come," said Dr. John Senyonyi, the Deputy Vice Chancellor, Development and External Relations, UCU.

The videoconference has come through collaboration between members of the Research and Education Network of Uganda (RENU), a not for profit organisation, and the Ministry of ICT which provided the technical staff and video conferencing equipment.

The National Information and Communication Technology Agency (NITA) were also involved. UCU and Makerere University are the first two universities in the RENU physical network.

RENU was established by Vice Chancellors and CEOs of research institutions in Uganda in 2006. It is also part of a global system of national research and education networks called NRENs linked up to share knowledge.

The library will have on a "visible footprint in virtual space, occupied by digital extension of libraries across the world because there is a large and rapidly growing body of content that inhabits the real “e-state”.
