Yesterday 23rd January,2013, the President of Kenya, Mwai Kibaki launched a $14.5bn projects to build a new city intended to be an IT business hub. “Konza Technology City” is being constructed on a 5,000-acre stretch of land strategically found 60km from Nairobi, 50km from Jomo Kenyatta international airport; 500km from Mombasa and the railway within 4km.

“Africa’s Silicon Savannah,” as it has been nicknamed is to be built over a period of 20 years and is the flagship project of the Kenyan governments Vision 2030 initiative to create a globally competitive and prosperous nation with a high quality life. More than 200,000 jobs are expected to be created by 2030.

The components of Konza Technology City include a university campus focused on research and technology, data centres, high speed mass transport system, superior modern integrated infrastructure among others.

This Silicon Savannah has the capacity to serve the East African region and beyond so here is yet another opportunity for Ugandan software developers to participate in development of the region.
