E-Governance Project Drags On PDF Print E-mail

The National Backbone Infrastructure (NBI) and e-governance project seems to have been put on hold three years since it was supposed to be launched.

The government had planned to interlink all its operations by 2011 through the use of the e-governance project.
However, three years down the road, the NBI project, a major support tool for the e-governance project is just in its third and second last phase.

The e-governance project had been scheduled to start in 2009, however, a number of challenges had forced the government to hold its launch, shifting its focus to 2011, a date that was also flouted. The multi-billion contract was awarded to Huawei – a Chinese technology firm under the supervision of National Information Technology Authority Uganda (NITA-U), a department under the ministry of ICT.

In an interview with Prosper recently, Ms Leonah Mbonimpa, the NITA-U spokesperson said that phase one and two of the project had been completed and successfully implemented. The two phases have a laid fibre optic cable network of 1,400.76 kilometres with an established primary data centre and a Metropolitan Area Network (MAN). “The network has a connectivity of 27 ministries, with an interlinked system that currently has the capacity to power the e-governance project.” Read more...
