'A' Level software scholarship starts PDF Print E-mail
By Davis Weddi

The East African Centre for Open Source Software (EACOSS) has given 25 scholarships to the top candidates in the 2005 Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education examinations under its Senior A-Level Software Award (SLASA) initiative.

The scholarships will enable the beneficiaries to attend a three-week training in Information and Communication Technology (ICT) at the Centre’s modern training facility at Nakawa, beginning on April 24 2006.

The candidates, drawn from each of the regions of Kampala, Northern, Western, Southern and Eastern, were selected from among the top candidates in the A level exams, from both rural and urban schools.

To set off SALSA, which is being conducted in conjunction with Women of Uganda Network (WOUGNET), EACOSS held a press conference at their training facility located at the complex housing the Uganda Institute for Information and Communication Technology, in Nakawa, Kampala.

“We are rewarding these best performing students because we believe in future, nobody can afford to live without some basic ICT knowledge,??? said Chris Kasangaki, the Centre’s Financial Administrator. “This is an incentive to both the students and the schools. We shall donate to the schools the training manuals used by the students as well as some CDs. We shall also be available to offer training to the schools if they request,??? added Kasangaki.

The scholarships will cover training, transport, food, accommodation and related expenses during the three weeks of the training.
